The first portion of this lecture will discuss upper respiratory diseases in the dog and cat including feline upper respiratory infections, chronic rhinosinusitis, nasopharyngeal polyps, and laryngeal paralysis. The second portion will discuss lower respiratory diseases including feline asthma, canine infectious respiratory disease complex, bacterial pneumonia, canine influenza, tracheobronchial collapse, and treatment of cardiac disease. Thoracic radiographs will be viewed and interpreted to increase the attendee’s confidence in recognizing abnormal lung patterns.

Urinary Tract Disease (3 CE)

Disease not failure. Optimizing management of CKD in cats. Characterize feline chronic kidney disease cases and cater therapy appropriately.

Making sense of that pesky proteinuria. Understanding and treating PLN in dogs. Interpret tests that evaluate dogs with proteinuria and design a treatment plan.

To treat or not to treat: Urine culture interpretation. Compare urinary tract infections with asymptomatic bacteriuria and select appropriate antibiotic therapy when indicated.

Small Animal Cardiology (3 CE)

Diagnosing and Managing Acquired Heart Disease without an Echocardiogram 
This presentation with focus on how to diagnosis and manage acquired heart disease in the absence of an echocardiogram or cardiologist. The emphasis will be on the three most common acquired heart diseases such as Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease (MMVD) and Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) in cats.

Approach to Puppy and Kitten Murmurs
This presentation will provide an overview of common congenital heart defects and cardiovascular diagnostics. Additionally, heart sounds and murmurs will be reviewed.  The main focus will be on the diagnostic approach to murmurs ausculted in puppies and kittens.

Speakers

Michael Stone, DVM, DACVIM

Dr. Stone is a 1984 graduate of Michigan State University. He worked three years in private practice before entering a small animal internal medicine residency at Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. After completion Dr. Stone worked on the staff at the Cummings School, and then the Ontario Veterinary College, before returning to Massachusetts for 10 years as a specialist in private practice. Dr. Stone returned to the Cummings School at Tufts University in 2000 where he spends half his time as a Clinical Associate Professor. His remaining time is spent as a traveling ultrasonographer for veterinary practices located in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Dr. Stone has a special interest in immune-mediated and infectious diseases of dogs and cats.

Linda E. Luther, DVM, MVSc, DACVIM (SAIM)

Dr. Linda Luther grew up in Salem and Marblehead, MA, and received her DVM degree from the University of Minnesota (class of 1988). She worked in private practice for five years before completing a residency in small animal internal medicine at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She became board-certified in small animal internal medicine in 1996.From 1997 to 2020 she was the staff internist at a 10-doctor, small animal general practice in southern New Hampshire. Beginning in 2012, she has been a small animal internal medicine consultant for Antech Diagnostics. She has also worked for Sound since 2001, first as a telemedicine consultant and then since 2003 as an instructor for their ultrasound education courses. She lives in Durham, NH with her husband Tom, several brackish and freshwater aquarium fish, and an albino African clawed frog. Outside of work, she is an avid bicyclist, and she also enjoys weight training, yoga and traveling.

Kursten Pierce, DVM, DACVIM (Cardiology)

Kursten Pierce is currently an Assistant Professor in Cardiology at North Carolina State University. Following her cardiology residency at Tufts University she completed a two-year fellowship in interventional cardiology at Colorado State University. Her interests include teaching, the diagnosis and management of congenital heart disease, exotics cardiology, cardiac biomarkers, and minimally-invasive fluoroscopically guided interventions.
