Addison’s Disease – The Great Pretender
Description: Review the different types of hypoadrenocorticism (i.e., Addison’s disease), pathogenesis, demographic risk factors, clinical spectrum, clinicopathologic abnormalities, and tricks to treat stable and unstable patients. This lecture will aim to get veterinarians more comfortable with identifying cases with Addison’s disease, understanding how it develops, how to diagnose it, and what is needed to have a successful outcome.

Gallbladder mucoceles – Not so fun gak for dogs
Description: Understand the pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical spectrum, clinicopathologic abnormalities, benefits and limitations of ultrasound, and recommendations for treatment.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome – More than just stretchy skin
Description: Review physiology of collagen synthesis and consequences of errors in pathway. Provide correlations between dogs, cats, and humans and the incorporation of molecular genetics for diagnostic and prognostic purposes. Lastly, we will review clinical information related to this disorder in dogs and cats.

Jared Jaffey, DVM, MS, DACVIM

Dr. Jared Jaffey is a board-certified small animal internist and Assistant Professor at the Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine. He is from South Florida and attended the University of Florida for his undergraduate studies. He enjoyed Gainesville so much (Go Gators!) that he stayed in town to attend veterinary school, where he graduated in 2012. He then moved across the country to East Bay, California, where he completed a private practice rotating internship. He moved back to South Florida, completed two internal medicine specialty internships, and obtained a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences from Florida Atlantic University. Dr. Jaffey then completed a three-year residency in small animal internal medicine at the University of Missouri in 2018. He has been a part of the Midwestern University team since 2018.

In a professional setting, Dr. Jaffey loves teaching veterinary students, performing research, and seeing patients. His research interests include the following areas hepatobiliary, endocrinology, respiratory tract, infectious diseases, immunologic effects of vitamin D, and several hereditary disorders such as cytochrome b5 reductase deficiency and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. He has > 60 journal article publications and authored book chapters in several reference textbooks including Ettinger’s Textbook of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Small Animal Gastroenterology, and Clinical Veterinary Advisor. He also lectures nationally and internationally on various topics related to small animal internal medicine.

Dr. Jaffey’s incredible partner in crime is Dr. Casandra Jacobs, who is also a small animal internist. They share 2 dogs (Luna, and Roscoe) and 3 cats (Odie, Sylvie, and Bam Bam). Dr. Jaffey used to have a menagerie of houseplants but that has changed since his cats outlawed them. Dr. Jaffey enjoys staying active at the gym, watching and playing sports, and dominating fantasy football.
